Asbestos Littering next Rip Curl Pro stop

Yesterday, Victorica’s local news announced that due to pollution, Bells Beach has been labelled “a major public health risk”. Asbestos has been leaking in to the water due to an old stormwater pipe. The news of polluted water comes as a concern for the surf community; epecially with the Rip Curl Pro event will take place in mid-April. Australian locals like Maurice Cole, founder of Bells Beach Preservation Society, blame council for literally trying to ‘cover up’ the mess. Cole notes that council workers have been seen covering the old pipe with sand and rocks.

“They obviously decided to save money by hiding it from the public,” Mr Cole said. “In the process they have cracked the pipe and that is causing asbestos fibres to wash out on to the beach when it rains.”

In defense to the allegations Dennis Barker, Shire spokesman, blames members of the public and assures that it will be removed before the Rip Curl Pro.

Regardless of who’s at fault, lets hope they get this mess cleaned up soon!
