Blast to the Past: Sidewalk Surfer, Huntington Beach 1976

Back in the 1970s, skateboarding was still in its purist form and emerging as a culture of its own. Skateboarding was a way of life for kids in the West Coast, skating day in and day out with little care about anything else. Photographer Hugh Holland helped capture this monumental period of time when skateboarding culture was an emerging movement in Los Angeles. With no background in the scene but eager and hungry to document what he believed to be something special, Holland’s photos have captured an essence of skateboarding in its infant stage.

His series of photos offer a notable glimpse into the California skateboarding scene–skaters hurling themselves across pools and banks, chilling in the afternoon sun. Check out this album and absorb skateboarding its truest form, none of that commercialized stuff, just skating.
