OC Skateboarders Get Skateboarding Ban Postponed

Skateboarders of all ages came together in Laguna Beach on Tuesday to try and sway the City Council to postpone a ban on skateboarding on Skyline Drive, a busy street with an 8% grade that drops 516 feet. City officials recommended a ban on skateboarding on the street after receiving 19 reports and complaints from citizens who drive along the street frequently and are afraid of hitting someone.

More than 20 skateboarders spoke at the meeting on Tuesday, asking the Council not to restrict skateboarding based on the actions of a few younger skateboarders. In April 2011, the City Council established rules of conduct for skateboarders. The regulations restrict skateboarding to daylight hours, and boarders are required to wear helmets. They are prohibited from acrobatics, sitting or lying on the boards, and they must obey traffic laws such as not crossing the double yellow line.

Laguna Beach skateboarders now have 60 days to try to reform rogue skateboarders into law-abiding citizens to avoid the ban.
