Huge White Shark Caught in Gulf of California

As reported by Grind TV a massive Great White shark was hauled in by fisherman in Mexico over the weekend.

Two men were trawling a net for smaller fish when they realized they’d hit pay dirt – or what they thought was simply a large school of fish. To their amazement the net instead contained a 20-foot 2,000 pound white shark.

“We were amazed and immediately realized that we had a huge, dead, great white shark, and then we thought what are we going to do?,” said Guadalupe, one of the fishermen.

In a scene out of Jaws the two men were only commanding a 22-foot skiff with a small outboard motor. No doubt Gaudalupe or his mate Baltazar must have been channeling their inner Chief Brody when that great fish rose to the surface, despite being dead. “We’re going to need a bigger boat…”

With a dead, 2,000 great white in their net the two decided to tow it back to shore, which took an hour. The called for help and all the locals from nearby Guaymas swarmed to the beach, requiring some 50 peopleto pull the dead weight onto the sand. In a local interview with Pisces Sportfishing the two men claimed to have never seen such a large fish in their lives.

The warm waters of the region are not typically associated with white sharks who tend to be prevalant in more temperate zones where theeir favorite foods – sea mammals – prefere to cal home.

Though scientists say it’s not all that unusual.

“While it’s unusual that fishermen will land sharks that large, the occurrence of large adult white sharks is not uncommon for Gulf waters,” said Christopher Lowe, a Southern California white shark expert who has conducted extensive tagging studies involving the species. “In fact, several satellite tagged sharks from California and Guadalupe Island [west of Baja California] have traveled into the gulf. So we know they are there.”
