After four straight lay days here at the 2017 Volcom Pipe Pro, today competitors were greeted with one sand-sucking NNE pushing below sea-level rights down the beach from Backdoor to Off The Wall. While it was by no means traditional Pipe conditions, today was still dramatic, to say the least.
We saw a handful of 8s and 9s, with far more bellyflops to dry sand and guillotine lips to the head than successful rides. While clean tubes weren’t as common as can be, it wasn’t for lack of trying. From the young guns like Wyatt McHale and Seth Moniz to the more seasoned competitors with less-than elastic joints, bodies were put on the line for Round 2 berths.
