If you find yourself heading to Santa Barbara, Calif. this weekend for some surf, keep you're eye out for a Great White. This past Wednesday, an injured mammal was spotted off Stearns Wharf near the mooring ball. Upon closer discovery, Harbor Patrol officials found a pregnant mature sea lion that suffered a deep belly gash.
"We've got a shark out there." That's Marine Mammal Expert Peter Howarth's reaction to the mauling of a sea lion by a Great White Shark off Stearns Wharf.
So how big was this Great White? By looking at the the bite marks, the shark was most likely a 8-9 foot juvenile and the kill is considered earlier in the season.
