On November 3rd, Les Deux in Hollywood played host to the future...the future of surfing that is. Surfing's elite gathered for the world premiere of Modern Collective, the first featured film from Kai Neville, an Australian film prodigy.

Modern Collective

Modern Collective exclusively follows six of the world's best freestyle surfers as they set out on a voyage to alter the perception of modern day surfing. They travel the globe and showcase the tricks in their quiver and have a blast in the process. In addition to 'CT standouts like Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith, MC features others with freakish talent who are about to burst onto the scene. Dusty Payne, Dion Agius, Mitch Coleborn and Yadin Nicol round out the crew.

It was a bit surreal to have a surf film premiere at Les Deux, one of Hollywood's most exclusive clubs. For a night, surfing went clubbing. Attendees were greeted by Skullcandy models who passed out complimentary headphones for all to enjoy the film. That's right, each attendee heard the film through their personal audio system. People came from near and wide to catch this flick. You couple a young and vivacious crowd with an open bar (thanks to Smirnoff and Monster), and things are bound to get interesting.

Have you ever seen so many headphones?

The crowd was hyped for the film to start. I mean, I guess it was fitting...this was one of the most talked about surf films to come out in some time. Low and behold, Modern Collective did not disappoint. The combination of elite surfing, artsy videography and a bangin' soundtrack never do. I can't tell you about Jordy's part. I was busy spinning while trying to track how many rotations he was pulling in his airs. His part was unearthly, it was like break-dancing on a wave.

Another standout to me was Yadin Nicol, a young Aussie bloke who is on the cusp of qualifying for the WCT. He seems to have a complete arsenal of tricks in his bag, and he blends them quite proficiently. It's only a matter of time until you see him with the top 45 (or now 32) of the sport.

The world premiere of Modern Collective met my expectations + twins. If you want to see what kids will be pulling in 5 years, you don't have to wait. You just have to catch Modern Collective.

Shades of Skate

Shades of Skate

Early this summer BNQT filmer Grant Schubert hitched a ride with the Anon Optics skate team as they loaded into a rental RV and perused through the Pacific Northwest. The crew: Nuge, Clint Peterson, Brian "Slash" Hansen, Pat Melcher, Tom "The Bomb" Bonilla and Garreth Stehr show multiple shades of skate as they strum guitars by campfire at night and slay smooth concrete trannies by day.
