Orcas scare kayaker with close encounter, leaves him shaking; video

Brett Aho was kayaking with friends in Puget Sound on Saturday when the Washingtonian noticed a pod of orcas on the horizon heading in their direction.

“We were definitely trying to get out of their way,” Aho told Storyful, no doubt aware of NOAA rules prohibiting vessels from getting within 200 yards of killer whales or trying to sit in their paths.

Aho didn’t seem to have any choice with this case, however (warning for a couple of expletives):

“What’s up whale?” Aho said while viewing several orcas in front of him.

A moment later, at least three orcas surfaced right next to him and exhaled in a surprise close encounter.

“Oh hello, hello, hi,” a clearly stunned Aho said.

“When they popped up right next to me, it scared the crap out of me,” Aho told Storyful. “My hands were shaking like crazy; thank you video stabilization.

“They really are huge. Easily larger than a kayak.”
