Skier at Big Sky Resort encounters mountain goat on trail; video

One of the coolest byproducts of skiing at Big Sky Resort in Montana is the possibility of seeing wildlife, particularly while riding the Lone Peak Tram from which mountain goats are sometimes spotted at a distance.

So image the amazement of one skier who actually encountered a mountain goat closeup on the trail ahead of him.

“I paused, warming myself with awe,” Beau Blessing, a ski instructor, told ViralHog. “He was beautiful!…I didn’t want to scare him off, and kept still.”

After taking some photos, Blessing shot video of the encounter:

Blessing was on a long, narrow traverse in the Headwaters area trying to reach the double-black diamond run called Coldspring when the encounter occurred.

“This is my third season teaching skiing at Big Sky and first time seeing a mountain goat,” Blessing told USA Today. “Some workmates that ‘guide’ the north summit (where the goats are likely) say they see goats ‘rarely,’ seldom close.

“Ski patrollers that work the gnarly ridgeline of Headwaters and cliffy terrain of the north summit snowfields see them also on occasion. But one fellow ski instructor has seen only one in 15 years. And most agree that that close is definitely something special…

“This one was beautiful, on a beautiful day. Moments like these make my lifestyle one worth living!”
