Great white shark startles anglers with sudden appearance behind boat; ‘I was in shock’

Kyle Morningstar and Ian Smith were pulling anchor Saturday beyond Ponce Inlet, Fla., when a great white shark materialized just a few feet from the the stern, startling the anglers and generating the type of reaction one might expect during such an encounter.

“I was just in shock,” Morningstar told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. “When it circled a second time I was shouting and yelling to my friend to get the phone and shoot the video.”

The footage shows a fairly large white shark with a host of remoras swimming to its left, immediately beyond the 23-foot vessel’s stern. “He’s coming up to the surface!” one of the men shouts in astonishment.

(The original video, which contains profanity, was posted to Instagram by Morningstar on Sunday next to a description that reads, “GREAT WHITE!!! Sorry for the language but check this thing out.”)

The anglers had been fishing for red snapper 26 miles offshore. They had just begun to hoist the anchor when Morningstar saw a flash of remoras and then a vague shape of the large shark before it fully materialized. (Remoras often attach themselves to sharks and feed on their host’s parasites.)

“We ran around our boat and that monster shark just circled around us, did two laps just checking us out,” Morningstar said. “It was not scared.”

The anglers, however, were somewhat unnerved. “After it disappeared, we hurried to get ashore,” Morningstar said, adding that a line from the 1975 thriller Jaws kept replaying in his head.

That line, for those who haven’t guessed: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
