Snowmobilers’ harassment of giant brown bear nearly ends in disaster; video

Disturbing video has surfaced showing two snowmobilers chasing a massive brown bear through the snow soon after the animal had emerged from hibernation. During the chase, the frightened bear turns on its heels, rears up and tries to strike one of its pursuers with its massive paw.

The harassment of the bear, which occurred on Russia’s Paramushir Island, seemingly ends with the exhausted animal climbing a snowily slope as the snowmobilers veer in another direction (video posted above).

Video footage was uploaded to YouTube last Thursday. Danila Dudarev, Deputy Minister of Forestry and Hunting, described the snowmobilers’ behavior to he Siberian Times as “outrageous.”

Dudarev added, “The beginning of spring is quite a [stressful] time for the animals, and people who chase bears like this are acting unethically.”

Clearly, the bear was acting in self-defense when it tried to attack one of the snowmobilers. Dudarev said the actions of the snowmobilers could make the bear aggressive toward humans it might encounter in the future.

The Siberian Times reported that since the snowmobilers were not armed and did not physically harm the bear, they were not charged.

Paramushir Island is part of the Kuril chain in the Sea of Okhotsk, in the northwest Pacific Ocean.
