Andrew Cotton about to become a finalist in the WSL’s Wipeout of the Year category

The World Surf League has announced top nominees for its annual WSL Big Wave Awards, and typically the most viral category is Wipeout of the Year because video footage reveals so emphatically that the ocean – not even the most courageous of surfers – is in charge.

The Big Wave Awards will announce winners in all categories – including Biggest Wave and Ride of the Year – during an awards ceremony in Southern California on April 28.

The contest honors expert surfers for exploits during a 12-month period. Nobody aspires to be included in Wipeout of the Year, but the winner earns $5,000. Below are the top five unsuccessful rides, showing that bravado and skill can only carry an athlete so far in unpredictable storm-generated surf.
