Travis Pastrana and friends ride among massive elephants and ferocious lions

Acclaimed freestyle motocross riders Travis Pastrana, Blake “Bilko” Williams and Dusty Wygle recently survived what has to rank as one of the zaniest wildlife expeditions of all time.

The accompanying footage shows the athletes touring the South African wilderness and encountering massive elephants, curious zebras, and a lion that tried to steal away with one of their helmets. (Best viewed in high-definition.)

“I’m not OK with this,” Travis Pastrana says as elephants close in

Bilko appears most at ease among the wild and unpredictable animals, while Pastrana, who is legendary for his fearlessness, appears to be less than intrepid at times.

“I don’t know if I’m OK with this,” he says, as three elephants surround and dwarf the rider as he sits on his bike.

Elephant does not seem to like the sound of dirt bikes

The largest bull elephant, at one point, takes exception when Bilko revs his bike, trumpeting into the rider’s face.

The odyssey continues until the riders reach the zebras and disembark for a quick foot adventure, during which Pastrana makes the connection that where zebras hang out, lions must be nearby.

Lion briefly makes off with a helmet

“Don’t lions eat zebras?” he asks.

Sure enough, several young lions are inspecting their bikes when they return – “I am not OK with this,” Pastrana says – and this portion is as amusing as the elephant encounter.

We’re not sure how much of this adventure was staged, but it’s unlike anything you’re likely to see on the nature channels.
