Bear cub surprises young hunter in suspenseful encounter captured on video

A 14-year-old hunter in Canada experienced a suspenseful encounter with a black bear cub Sunday after the animal climbed a tree and seemed intent on joining him in his stand.

Video footage showing the cub and boy in close quarters had been viewed more than 3.5 million times on the Smith Game Calls Facebook page as of Tuesday morning.

Steven Smith, founder of the company, told USA Today that the footage was captured in the province of Alberta. The boy, whose father had recently died, was hunting with Mark White, a seasoned hunter and close family friend.

The cub climbed the tree after being scared, along with its siblings, by an older male bear. The boy remained calm and motionless while closely watching the cub.

White, who captured the footage, is heard making sounds to distract the cub and keep it from entering the boy’s stand.

“The only reason they allowed the cub to get that close is because a [male bear] came in and chased the cubs up the trees,” Smith explained. “They did not want to risk surprising  or scaring the cub just in case momma decided to react.”

Eventually, the cub retreated and hurried to find momma and its siblings, while White and the boy continued their hunting vigil.
