According to the Charlotte Observer, the method was even endorsed by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, which described the video on Facebook as “a great trick to detect nearby sharks.”

Rinder, 33, told the Observer that he posted the video on Facebook on June 30 for the enjoyment of family and friends. “But then it spread like wildfire,” he said.

As of Friday morning, his Facebook video had been viewed 2.1 million times. “OMG it actually works,” reads the description.
