Bear leaps in front of mountain bikers in startling encounter

Oscar Gomez and his friend Justin Holmes were riding down the Whistler Mountain Bike Park in British Columbia on Friday when a bear came out of nowhere and leaped out onto the trail just ahead of them, stopping them in their tracks.

“Even though it’s pretty common to see bears roaming around near the trails at the Whistler Bike Park, it’s not very common to have one jump right in front of you and follow the trail,” Gomez, who captured video from his chest camera, told BNQT Outdoors.

“So we were pretty surprised, and at first we thought it was another biker just popping out of nowhere, as soon as we realized it was a bear we slammed on the brakes.”

The bear was a cub, so the mountain bikers got off their bikes and backed away to give it some space, knowing the momma bear had to be nearby.

After waiting a while, Gomez and Holmes lifted their bikes and carried them down the trail to make themselves look bigger and kept a cautious eye out for momma bear.

“We did take a few minutes to look around and make sure no other cubs were nearby and that momma bear wasn’t lurking around the next turn,” Gomez explained to BNQT Outdoors. “Before continuing we made sure to make a lot of noise and yelled a couple times so that no other bears would be startled.

“They are pretty accustomed to have people around and usually keep to themselves. However, getting that close to clubs is never a good idea regardless of the situation.”
