Man takes girlfriend fishing for first time, proposes on boat

It’s quite likely that Laura Blaisdell’s first fishing trip will always be her most memorable fishing trip.

Blaisdell caught three tasty salmon during the all-day charter last Wednesday on Lake Ontario. But the big moment occurred midway through the excursion, when her boyfriend of one month bent to a knee and proposed.

“If I would have known, I would have tried to do something a little nicer with my hair,” Blaidsell, 27, a registered nurse, told Syracuse.com.

The proposal by Troy Ray McMullen, 25, who works with Blaisdell at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., was captured on video by Capt. Tony Buffa. (Viewers may note that Blaisdell was still holding a wriggling salmon when McMullen popped the question.)

“I want to spend forever with you. Will you marry me?” he asked.
Blaisdell briefly covered her mouth with her free hand, then answered, “Yes.”

McMullen, a veteran Lake Ontario angler, explained to Syracuse.com why he chose to propose during a fishing trip:

“Fishing has always been a big part of who I am. It just seemed like the right place and the right time. I’ve been out several times with Tony. I just felt it was a good time to share the moment with him. And yes, we did catch a lot of fish.”

Said Blaisdell of her first-ever angling odyssey: “It was very exciting. We had talked about [marriage], but I didn’t know it was going to happen.”

Buffa, whose boats run out of Oswego Harbor, wrote on Facebook:  “In between catching some nice king salmon Troy Ray popped the big question to Laura and the answer was an unequivocal, immediate YES.”

McMullen is a nursing technician, also trying to become a registered nurse. Blaisdell has a 2-year-old daughter. A wedding date has not yet been scheduled.
