Racers survive horrific speedboat crash on Alaskan river

A sudden wind gust sent a homemade speedboat flying into the air with two crew members getting ejected in a horrific boat crash during the Yukon 800 Mile Marathon on the Tanana and Yukon rivers in Alaska.

Kyle Malamute and Josh Rutman were racing in the Roland Lord Memorial Race on Sunday, August 5 when the incident occurred. Malamute caught the entire episode on his helmet-mounted GoPro, and ViralHog posted the video Sunday. All the action happens within the first 45 seconds. Warning for coarse language at the very end.

Malamute, the driver, told ViralHog that they were seconds away from the leader after the halfway point when the weather changed for the worse.

“Winds picked up, making for some nasty conditions for these race boats,” Malamute said. “These homemade boats are built like an airplane wing, made to fly.

“We were already having a hard time keeping control of the boat with the headwinds. We came across a straight stretch of the river and got up to full speed. Halfway down the straightaway, a huge gust of wind caught us off guard and took the boat airborne, like a plane taking flight.”

Rutman, the crew member, wrote on Facebook that once they hit the straightaway he slid backward, which is common. But right after Malamute looked to his right, you see a dark section in the water. It was the gust of wind that caught them by surprise.

“My experienced crew member tried to move forward to get it back down, but it was too late,” Malamute said. “We braced for impact and luckily came out alive.”

Rutman wrote that they “were grateful it wasn’t worse and we’re okay.”

“We just wanted to be competitive heading back down river,” he added. “Sometimes you push the limit and find the breaking point.”

The race is billed as the longest, roughest and toughest speedboat race in the world, and it proved to be just that for these racers.
