Boy, 14, bitten by shark while surfing off Atlantic Beach, N.C.

A 14-year-old surfer was bitten twice by a shark Sunday in murky conditions off Atlantic Beach, N.J.

Fire Chief Adam Snyder told Carteret County News-Times that the shark bit the boy two times on the right leg below the knee, but quickly let go each time.

“You could tell it was a shark bite by the marks,” Snyder said, adding that this was the first shark incident involving a surfer or swimmer off Atlantic Beach this summer.

The boy, who was not identified, swam to shore on his own and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received stitches and remained hospitalized for observation. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The incident occurred in early afternoon near the Oceanana Pier, a popular fishing spot.

It’s not clear what type of shark was involved, since nobody saw the predator, but the shark was likely hunting for fish when it bit the boy.

Said Snyder: “It’s basically a case of mistaken identity. Sharks are out there, but the chances of being bitten is similar to being struck by lightning.”
