Maine fisherman hits lottery of lobster fishing with ‘ghost lobster’

Maine fisherman Mike Billings hit the lottery of lobster fishing Tuesday morning when he hauled in a rare “ghost lobster,” described as a 100 million-to-1 catch.

“I’ve caught blue ones, bright orange and calico, but never a white one,” Billings told BNQT via email.

He’s even caught one with normal colors that had a blue claw.

Billings caught the translucent-like crustacean off the coast of Stonington, and it comes on the heels of another commercial lobster fisherman catching a rare cotton candy-colored lobster a few weeks before, according to Coastal Living.

Billings took photos of his rare catch and tossed the ghost lobster back into the sea since it was undersized.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the lobster was white likely due to leucism, a genetic condition in which there is a partial loss of pigmentation resulting in animals being white.

It is probably not an albino as animals with albinism characteristically have pink or red eyes and this one doesn’t appear to have those features. In any case, it’s an intriguing catch.
