Battling muskoxen create rare roadblock for Alaskan worker

Jonathan Kangas facetiously called it “just another day at work” in his video, but the Alaskan worker knew it was something special when he came across two muskoxen creating a rare roadblock on the remote Dalton Highway in northern Alaska.

“I was traveling to a remote oil pump station for work-related purposes when I came across these two muskoxen blocking the road,” Kangas explained to BNQT.

“So I pulled off to the side of the road and witnessed them fighting. All this happened under 15 minutes. It wasn’t until they started squaring off that I started video recording.”

To show dominance during the rut, bull muskoxen will ram heads, roar, swing their heads and paw the ground. Some of these characteristics were shown by these two.

Muskoxen are known for thick coats of fur and musky odor during the rut, hence the name.

Kangas witnessed the encounter on August 20 just north of the Brooks Range along the 414-mile highway that stretches from north Fairbanks to Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean and the Prudhoe Bay oil fields.

“There are a lot of people that drive that road and have never witnessed something like that so close,” Kangas told BNQT. “Most of the time you can see them from a distance but never grand standing in the middle of the road.”
