Orcas give fishermen 'insane' show in unusual place

A pod of orcas treated a group of fishermen to an incredible show in a place not known for killer whale sightings—about 35 miles south of San Diego near the Coronado Islands off Mexico.

Captain Ryan Sweeney of BRINK Expeditions was leading a fishing charter with six anglers when the amazing encounter occurred Saturday halfway through the trip.

Fishing was slow offshore, so Sweeney decided to check out the islands and when they were eight miles west of them, the orcas—about five or six of them—were spotted so they slowed down. And the show began.

“They immediately came up to the boat and were very playful and curious,” Sweeney told BNQT. “At one point we saw the biggest one eating a sea lion about 40 yards away from the boat. I couldn’t believe my eyes!

“Then someone onboard mentioned a video that surfaced a couple years ago of orcas riding in their wake so I thought, hmm…let’s see what happens.”

So Sweeney started motoring along. The orcas loved playing in the boat’s wake.

“Once we started moving it was game on,” Sweeney told BNQT.

“We were going about 10-14 knots [11-16 mph] when all of a sudden the biggest one erupted off of our starboard stern so close that our deckhand could almost reach out and touch it!

“It was unbelievable! From there it just continued for quite a while. They were doing barrel rolls and other tricks in our wake. It was insane.”

Sweeney told BNQT it was the first time he’s ever seen orcas in this region in his 15 years as skipper, adding that it’s very rare to have happen off the San Diego coast.

“Their migration patterns typically put them farther offshore, along the west wide of the Channel Islands,” he said.

The entire encounter, some video of which Sweeney shared with San Diego’s KGTV, lasted 1 1/2 hours.
