Biggest wave ever surfed by a woman at Mexican Pipeline?

Bianca Valenti, a professional big-wave surfer from San Francisco, set a new standard for female surfers at the Mexican Pipeline on Sunday when she paddled into and caught the two biggest waves of the day. In so doing, she also proved a point for equal pay for women.

It was the biggest wave ever paddled into by a woman at Puerto Escondido, Surfer magazine declared, saying “Bianca Valenti catches one for the record books.”

According to Shannon Marie Quirk of The Interia, Valenti was the only female in the water Sunday at Puerto Escondido, better known as the Mexican Pipeline. Quirk said on her YouTube post of the big wave, “This very well might be the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman in Mexico.”

“I hesitate to call this the biggest wave that a woman has ever paddled into at Zicatela, but in my years of capturing men and women paddle into massive Puerto, this is definitely one of the biggest I’ve seen,” Quirk explained in The Interia. “It also might be the biggest paddle wave of the year thus far, man or woman.” (For the uneducated, big-wave surfers get towed into big waves by a Jet Ski or paddle into them on their own.)

Valenti responded to her epic rides by posting this reaction on Facebook: “Viva Mexico! Came down to celebrate last week’s equal pay announcement. Feels like a weight is lifted. And I am thankful to be here focusing on these amazing BIG waves!!!”

Earlier this month, the World Surf League announced it will offer equal prize money to men and women for all events, including the big-wave contests at Mavericks and the yearlong Championship Tour.

“It was simply the right thing to do,” Sophie Goldschmidt, the WSL’s first female CEO, said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “We want to be at the forefront of pushing for equality in all walks of life, starting on the waves.”

Valenti pretty much put an exclamation point on equal pay for women with her performance on Sunday.
