Girl freaks out over close encounter with whales

A scared girl began hyperventilating when three humpback whales approached and swam under the Lucianna family’s boat in an unusual close encounter Saturday in Puget Sound near Lynnwood, Wash.

Darren Lucianna shot video of the humpback whales as they approached the boat and he did his best to try to calm everyone down, though even he sounded a bit apprehensive at times.

“We’re all right, we’re all right, calm down, calm down,” he can be heard saying. “Relax. He’s checking us out. They’re not going to hurt you. Just relax. He’s right under us. Look at this you guys, you’ll never see this again.

“It’s OK. Relax. He’s going to check us out and go away.”

Once the whales separated themselves from the boat, Darren instructed whoever was driving to “drive away faster.”

Meanwhile, someone we presume to be Darren’s wife can be heard calling the authorities to report their GPS location in case the whales tipped the boat over.

“Don’t be scared, this is awesome,” Darren says as they move a safe distance away.

Ken Balcomb, executive director of the Center for Whale Research, told KING 5 News that it is uncommon for humpback whales to swim under the boat, but if they do they’re harmless and probably just want to play.

“Some individual humpbacks have a lot of curiosity and aren’t afraid of people,” Balcomb told KING 5 News.
