Whale knocks fisherman off kayak, gives him ‘what he deserved’

A fisherman on a kayak was knocked into the water by a whale calf he claimed had come to say hello and he captured the unnerving moment on video.

Jaco Tredoux was paddling back to shore near Ballito on the east coast of South Africa a couple of weeks ago when he noticed a mother whale and its calf frolicking in the calm waters.

“This was the very first time I have seen any whale so close in all the years of launching next to Catfish reef at Salt Rock,” Tredoux, identified by the North Coast Courier of South Africa, wrote in his YouTube description.

“As they were just behind backline I followed them for a little while keeping my distance. To my surprise the smaller whale came closer towards me and said `Hello.’”

That wasn’t exactly the way a witness to the incident saw it, however.

Tony Falkson, who watched the entire episode through binoculars from shore, wrote in a letter to the North Coast Courier:

To the paddleski fisherman I witnessed today doing something incredibly stupid near a couple of whales – not content to enjoy the closeness of these beautiful creatures from a safe distance, but following the mother and calf meters away.

And then paddling right over them was asking for trouble.

Watching you…being sent flying off your ski by a nudge from the mother was what you deserved and could have had tragic consequences for you.

Hopefully you have learned your lesson – keep your distance and show these wonderful visitors to our shores more respect.
