Anglers towed 7 miles but win epic battle with 800-pound tuna

David Brown and his fishing buddies got their giant bluefin tuna, but not before it towed their boat seven miles during a marathon battle last Wednesday off Nantucket, Mass.

“It was an awesome fish,” Brown, 57, told the Daily Hampshire Gazette. “I was in admiration of an adversary.”

The 800-pound, 9-foot-long tuna tested the anglers’ skills for more than six hours after taking a live mackerel used as bait. Also participating in the fight were Mike Cheney, Richard Downey and Bob Mischler.

The Falmouth Harbor-based charter boat, with an unidentified captain and crew, had traveled through a rainy night to reach an old shipwreck known to attract giant tuna.

The fish struck at first light and the anglers took turns with the rod and reel. “We were fighting him, wearing him down, and it took four guys to wear him down to the point where we could get him out of the water,” Brown said.

By this time the boat had been towed seven miles farther offshore.

The tuna was hauled into the boat after it was harpooned and tail-roped.

Technically, the captain and crew retained ownership of the fish, which was sold for between $5,000 and $8,000.

Western Atlantic bluefin tuna, which can be harvested on a limited basis, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Their fatty red flesh is prized as sashimi.
