Kayaker dwarfed by massive orca and somehow remains calm

A kayaker in Norway found himself dwarfed by a large male orca on Sunday as the mammal passed a mere inches from his vessel.

The accompanying footage, captured by David Gonzalez Buendia, shows the orca’s towering dorsal fin emerge in front of Berthold Hinrichs and slice eerily through the water close enough for Hinrichs to touch.

The veteran paddler, however, smartly remained motionless and allowed the orca to complete its inspection before resuming his adventure.

Buendia, a professional photographer based in Tromsø, told BNQT Outdoors that he was aboard the Arctic Explorer off Skjervøy when he witnessed Hinrichs’ close encounter.

Buendia is working on a documentary about orcas in the Arctic.

Hinrichs is a German-born adventurer who lives in Norway and often explores the fjords, bays and coastline in an inflatable kayak he launches from his sailboat.
