Catch of massive carp places British angler in rare company

A British angler on holiday in Hungary has caught a massive carp that placed him in rare company among his countrymen.

The 102-pound mirror carp, which Luke Vanes described as “a bit of a creature – a monster,” was weighed in a sling and released after its capture last week at a carp-fishing paradise known as Euro-Aqua.

According to the Express & Star, Vanes becomes only the fourth British angler to catch a carp weighing 100 pounds or more.

Vanes, 35, who hoisted the carp from the sling for photo and video opportunities, said it felt as though he were “lifting two bags of potatoes.”

He added: “A very heavy thing because normally you hold a fish up with your arms. This time I had to put my arms around its belly and lift with my back. It was a very powerful fish.”

Mirror carp, which are found in Europe, commonly reach weights of 50 pounds or more, but very few exceed 100 pounds.

They’re related to common carp, but considered a mutation of common carp.

The International Game Fish Assn. does not list world records for mirror carp, but the common carp record stands at 75 pounds, 11 ounces.

Euro-Aqua, a private fishery that accommodates guests on multi-day angling adventures, describes a 108-pound mirror carp caught on-site last year as the world record.

Vanes, who was fishing from shore, said the carp steadily pulled line for about 10 minutes before it felt more like dead weight for the duration of the battle.

“My personal best was a 73-pound carp and that was from the same venue,” Vanes said. “I’m extremely proud and it’s one of the best experiences I will ever have.”
